A Guide to Getting Started

Between observing my young adult children and their friends, as they figure out their life paths, and supporting my doula clients, who desire to stay home with their new babies rather than return to work at the end of their FMLA, I often find myself thinking about cool ways to live and expand while young and free. The current economy along with my positions in art, natural products, perinatal, and activist spaces has people regularly asking me if I know of any jobs. I rarely have a definitive “yes” to that question, but I am almost always good for providing useful resources and actionable guidance.
There’s sooooo much good stuff on offer and pretty easily accessible these days that simply did not exist when I was an available and motivated young person and parenting little ones. You just have to be open to thinking outside the box and know where to look.
Remote work is one of those opportunities. Whether you’re a student, parent, traveler, or simply someone who thrives by flexibility and being in your own spaces, there are numerous platforms where you can find legitimate jobs to fit your lifestyle. Here's a list of resources I've curated for BIPOC moms and parents who wanna stay at home with their babies, as well as for anyone who just prefers not going into an office or being on the clock.
How to Get Started
Choose your focus: Are you looking for freelance gigs, part-time work, or a full-time remote career?
Build your profile: Many sites require a resume, portfolio, or skills overview.
Apply widely: Remote work can be competitive, so apply for multiple opportunities.
Safety first: Always research companies and avoid offers that seem too good to be true.
Keep learning: Remote roles often reward adaptability and continuous learning.
